Better You- David Choi

Reviewed By DJ Dave from Komodo Music

I came across David Choi when looking for 'different' bridal waltz song for my main website blog. (Which if you want to check out, click HERE) I instantly liked his sound and featured him with alot of my clients making comment on how cool this guy was.

Now he as gone and done it again with a new release from his upcoming album "By My Side".

The song 'Better You' has that chill out feel that I love; using acoustic guitar and an amazing voice that sweeps me away to my 'Happy Place'.

It only goes for 1:55 and I do feel that he could have added a few more lines to make it longer and it wouldn't have lost any of the effect, but this short little pick me up is fun and catchy and I feel the world is a little better with playing.

Reminding me of a Jack Johnson, mixed with Joshua Rudin, sprinkled with Pete Murray and stirred with a secret spice; the end result is an artist who you should not only check out, but MUST buy his album when it becomes available!

Let You Be - Katie Campbell feat. Beat Culture (Perth Sound and Found Review)

Let You Be feat. Beat Culture by Katie Campbell

Reviewed By DJ Dave for Perth Sound and Found

Listening to this song the first time round I am happy to admit I didn’t get it…so I did what any good reviewer does, took some acid and listened to it again…and you know what, it made more sense this time round.

Ok that was a little harsh, but if you were expecting some lyrical masterpiece I suggest you check out the next review as this song isn’t it. What it IS though is a cool electronic blend with a catchy beat and a nice voice (even if it just keeps saying the same thing over and over)

This “Ministry” sounding song would make a lovely addition to those who like their cafĂ© del mar or their chill out soundtracks. I personally would use this at the beginning of an event as it gives of that “cool” vibe and is exceptionally easy to mix into.

I like the song for what it is, and although I can’t see this getting a crowd dancing, it is a perfect background track for any bar or club....or for those "special" trips ;-)

Alone- Cassandra Dimech

Reviewed By DJ Dave from Komodo Music

I tend to keep my ear to the ground for new talent. There is nothing more satisfying than finding an artist who you can clearly see is going to be “The Next Big Thing” and I have no doubt that Cassandra Dimech fits into the category like a piece of IKEA furniture (when you READ the instructions lol)

Cassandra contacted me asking if I could listen to her stuff…and wow, she has good stuff. The song “Alone” is the latest single from the Melbourne singer featuring “Kid Hudson” and it certainly packs a punch.

The song is a love ballad (I tend to avoid due to my profession) but when done correctly and without the “soppiness” I have no problems with them. The piano and guitar kept the song flowing nicely and the beautiful vocals by Cassandra kept me captivated. The guest vocals by Kid Hudson also nicely complemented the song. Usually when another artist is “featured” I tend to find they don’t bring anything to the table except the name, however I felt the combination of male and female vocals really worked well together.

Overall I liked what I heard and I would be interested to see what this Melbournite will get up to in the future. Providing she doesn’t stick to the love songs permanently and starts with producing some fun, upbeat tracks this girl could easily be our next “Aussie Rep” in the world music scene.

Told You So- Kid Hudson feat. Marcus

Reviewed By DJ Dave from Komodo Music

This song is a little different to what I tend to review as it is very mainstream pop (and regular follows know my opinion on THAT genre) but Kid Hudson, being a fellow Australian and someone just starting out on a solo career, I thought I would put aside my prejudice and give it ‘A Fair Go!’

The song’s lyrics are positive and upbeat and…What’s this?! A pop song that makes actually makes sense???!!! *Faints*. The beat is like any pop song: catchy and bubbly and will be stuck in your head if heard more than once on the radio. Kid has already received a fair bit of radio play so no doubt I will be requested this song at the next school ball I DJ for.

The guest rapper “Marcus” does his part and helps give the song some different tone (in a good way). I must admit though for a second I thought I was listening to “Travis MacCoy” from Gym Class Heroes as his rapping and voice felt very similar. That being said Marcus, I love his sound and he was very good in the role he played here.

Ok, my main gripe with this song is the same gripe I have with all modern pop songs…freakin AutoTune!! Kid Hudson has an amazing voice and I listened to some of his acoustic songs and was impressed by how talented he was, so to have AutoTune essentially rape his vocal cord almost made me want to cry. Now I am a realist, and understand to make a pop song for commercial play for today's “Teeny Bobbers” must have the dreaded AT in the track so I do not blame you Kid. I hate the game, not the player.

Overall this song is good for what it is but on a personal note I prefer his acoustic ‘un-plugged’ stuff. I am sure that this song will become popular and I wish Kid Hudson all the best in his career. I do feel that providing he avoids AutoTune like I avoid hard work, he will become an exceptional recording artist and will make Australia proud. Good luck mate :-)

Caffeine- The Irrationals (Perth Sound & Found Review)

I was not sure what to expect when I was handed this song, but I must say this is the first track in a long time (this is coming from a DJ remember) where I not only liked it immediately, but I am tempted to go out and buy their album based solely on this one song.

The rhythm guitar starting it off was all it took to get my attention. Before I knew it I was bopping my head and tapping my foot to this catchy tune about how this guy loves and needs his partner “more than caffeine” (which I can tell you to a coffee enthusiast is a lot).  Listening to this gave me that wonderful feeling you get when you find something valuable and special when you weren’t looking, diamond in the rough.

The band consists of Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar-Ben Hesp. Lead Guitar- Matt McGuire. Bass- Madolyn Morel- Drums-Drew Winchester. I have no idea where these guys have been hiding but everything they did was spot on the mark!

Beautiful vocals in the background, a positive message in the lyrics, great instrumental work and a strong but not overpowering singer all work together to make it an enjoyable listen.

One of the only drawbacks with this song was probably the length. The song itself is fun and a great spin but coming in at just under 4 and a half minutes, I feel they could have shaved maybe 30-40 seconds off without losing any of the effect. That being said though, if listening to this song on a Sunday while watching the sun go down with a beer in hand, you will probably find the timing just right.

A perfect summer song and a fresh new sound for the Perth scene. I firmly believe that supporting locals is always good but only if they have the skill to back it up; The Irrationals tick all the boxes and most definitely deserve a listen.
